Shoulder Pain After a Car Accident: Kinesiology Treatment Options

Shoulder Pain After a Car Accident: Kinesiology Treatment Options

Shoulder pain after a car accident is one of the most common — and most underestimated — injuries people experience following a motor vehicle collision. Whether it’s a dull ache that appeared the next morning or immediate sharp pain, shoulder injuries from car accidents can limit your movement, interrupt your sleep, and affect every part of daily life. If you’re dealing with shoulder pain after an MVA near Langley, BC, the kinesiologists at Vaughan’s Fitness are ICBC-approved and ready to help you recover with evidence-based active rehabilitation.

This guide explains the most common types of shoulder injuries sustained in car accidents, why early treatment matters, and how kinesiology-based active rehab can get you back to doing what you love — without pain.

Common Shoulder Injuries Caused by Car Accidents

The shoulder is a complex joint with a wide range of motion, which also makes it vulnerable to injury. During a collision, even a low-speed impact can force the shoulder into an unnatural position or cause rapid, forceful movement. Common car accident shoulder injuries include:

  • Rotator cuff tears or strains: The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder. Collision forces — especially if your hands were on the steering wheel — can strain or partially tear these tissues.
  • SLAP tears: A Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior (SLAP) tear involves the ring of cartilage (labrum) surrounding the shoulder socket. Often caused by a sudden pull or compression force at impact.
  • AC joint sprain (acromioclavicular joint): Where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade. Impact or bracing against the steering wheel can overload this joint.
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome: Post-accident inflammation can cause tendons to become pinched in the shoulder joint, leading to persistent pain and reduced range of motion.
  • Bursitis: The fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the shoulder joint can become inflamed following trauma.
  • Fractures: High-impact collisions may result in fractures of the clavicle, humerus, or scapula — these require medical management first, then rehabilitation.

It’s also common for referred pain from the neck and upper back to present as shoulder pain after a car accident. A thorough kinesiology assessment helps identify the true source of your pain so treatment targets the right area.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Treat Shoulder Pain After a Car Accident

A very common mistake after a motor vehicle accident is to wait and see if the pain “goes away on its own.” While some minor muscle soreness may resolve within days, shoulder injuries that involve tendons, ligaments, or the joint itself tend to worsen with inactivity — not improve.

Here’s why early intervention matters:

  • Scar tissue formation: Left untreated, injured soft tissues heal with scar tissue that limits mobility. Active rehab exercises break down this scar tissue and promote healthy healing.
  • Compensatory movement patterns: When one part of the shoulder hurts, you unconsciously shift load to other muscles. Over time, this creates new pain in the neck, elbow, or upper back.
  • ICBC timeline: ICBC has reporting and claim timelines. The sooner you’re assessed and begin treatment, the cleaner your documentation and the easier your claim process.
  • Muscle atrophy: Immobilizing a shoulder or simply avoiding use causes muscle wasting quickly — which prolongs recovery once you eventually do seek treatment.

The kinesiologists at Vaughan’s Fitness have been helping car accident patients in Langley and the surrounding Fraser Valley since 2013. Our 5.0★ Google rating reflects our commitment to getting people better — not just managing symptoms.

How Kinesiology Treats Car Accident Shoulder Pain

Kinesiology is the science of human movement — and it’s one of the most effective approaches to treating shoulder injuries from car accidents. As university-degreed kinesiologists (not just certified personal trainers), our team assesses your shoulder’s structure, mobility, strength, and movement mechanics before designing a personalized rehabilitation program.

A typical kinesiology-based treatment plan for a car accident shoulder injury may include:

  • Initial assessment: Range-of-motion testing, strength testing, postural analysis, and movement screens to determine what’s injured and how it’s affecting your movement.
  • Pain reduction phase: Gentle mobility work, rotator cuff activation exercises, and postural correction to reduce inflammation and begin restoring range of motion.
  • Strengthening phase: Progressive resistance exercises for the rotator cuff, scapular stabilizers, and surrounding muscles — building the support structure the shoulder needs to heal properly.
  • Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST): Our kinesiologists are trained in Fascial Stretch Therapy, a hands-on stretching technique that targets the joint capsule and surrounding fascia — very effective for improving shoulder mobility after injury.
  • Soft Tissue Release: Soft tissue release techniques address muscle tightness and adhesions in the rotator cuff, pec minor, and upper trap — common problem areas post-accident.
  • Functional reintegration: As pain resolves, we reintroduce activities of daily living, sport-specific movements, or work tasks to ensure you return to full function without re-injury.

Every session at Vaughan’s Fitness is private — you work one-on-one with your kinesiologist in our private Langley studio at 658 200th St. No crowded group classes, no waiting for equipment, no one-size-fits-all programs.

ICBC Active Rehab Coverage for Shoulder Injuries in BC

If your shoulder was injured in a motor vehicle accident, there’s a very good chance ICBC will cover your rehabilitation costs. Vaughan’s Fitness is an ICBC-approved active rehabilitation provider, and we offer direct billing to ICBC — meaning you don’t pay out of pocket for your sessions while your claim is active.

Here’s how ICBC active rehab coverage typically works for shoulder injuries:

  • Enhanced Care (formerly Part 7 benefits): ICBC’s Enhanced Care program covers active rehabilitation services for those injured in accidents after May 1, 2021. Coverage amounts depend on your injury classification.
  • You choose your provider: You have the right to choose your own ICBC-approved kinesiologist. You don’t need a doctor’s referral to see us, though having one can support your claim.
  • Direct billing: We bill ICBC directly for approved sessions. We’ll help you understand your coverage and ensure your treatment plan is fully documented for your claim.
  • WCB/WorkSafeBC: If your accident occurred while on the job, we also accept WCB referrals and can provide active rehab under WorkSafeBC. Ask us about our return-to-work programming.

For more information on how ICBC active rehab works in Langley and the surrounding area, see our detailed guide: ICBC Active Rehab in Langley: What to Expect After a Car Accident.

Shoulder Rehab Exercises You Can Start Now

Note: The exercises below are general in nature. Always consult with a kinesiologist or physician before starting a rehabilitation program after a car accident — your specific injury may require modifications.

These gentle movements are often used in the early stages of shoulder rehab after an MVA:

  • Pendulum swings: Lean forward with your unaffected arm on a table. Let the injured arm hang and make small circles with gravity assisting movement — this gently mobilizes the joint without loading it.
  • Wall slides: Stand facing a wall with both forearms resting on it. Slowly slide your arms upward, maintaining contact. Improves shoulder elevation and scapular mobility.
  • Doorframe stretch: Stand in a doorframe with your arm at 90 degrees, elbow bent. Gently lean forward to stretch the anterior shoulder and pec — important for posture correction post-accident.
  • Side-lying external rotation: Lying on your unaffected side, hold a light weight (or resistance band) and rotate your forearm up toward the ceiling. Activates the infraspinatus and teres minor — key rotator cuff muscles.
  • Scapular squeezes (retraction): Sitting or standing tall, gently draw your shoulder blades together and hold for 5 seconds. Strengthens the mid-back and promotes healthy shoulder mechanics.

These are starting points. A full kinesiology assessment will reveal exactly which exercises are appropriate for your specific injury and where you are in recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions: Shoulder Pain After a Car Accident

How soon after a car accident should I start active rehab for shoulder pain?

As soon as medically cleared to do so — typically within 1–2 weeks of your accident. Early intervention (before scar tissue sets in) leads to faster and more complete recovery. Don’t wait for the pain to become severe before seeking help.

Will ICBC pay for kinesiology treatment for my shoulder injury?

Yes, in most cases. Vaughan’s Fitness is an ICBC-approved active rehabilitation provider. Under ICBC Enhanced Care, kinesiologist services are a covered benefit for eligible accident victims. We can help you confirm your coverage and handle direct billing.

What’s the difference between seeing a physiotherapist and a kinesiologist for a shoulder injury?

Physiotherapists typically focus on pain management, manual therapy, and medical diagnosis. Kinesiologists focus on restoring movement, strength, and function through exercise and active rehabilitation. After a car accident, many patients benefit from both — physiotherapy first to manage acute pain, then kinesiology to restore full function. For a deeper comparison, see our article: Kinesiologist vs Physiotherapist: What’s the Difference?

How many sessions will I need to recover from a shoulder injury?

It varies based on the severity of your injury, your overall health, and how early you start treatment. Minor strains may resolve in 6–10 sessions. More complex injuries (partial rotator cuff tears, SLAP tears) can take 3–6 months of structured rehab. Your kinesiologist will set realistic timelines at your initial assessment.

Can I do ICBC active rehab at Vaughan’s Fitness if I live in Surrey or White Rock?

Yes. While our studio is located in South Langley (Brookswood), we serve clients from across the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland — including Surrey, White Rock, Aldergrove, Walnut Grove, and Cloverdale. Many clients drive to our private studio specifically for our one-on-one kinesiology approach. Read about our ICBC rehab services for Surrey residents here.

My wife and I have been training with Vaughan's for 6 years! We love the friendly and supportive trainers and environment.

Special kudos to our two trainers Marissa and Jorell who challenge us every week while making it fun, and of course to Jarid for his leadership. We are really pleased with the fitness levels and strength they've helped us to build.

Highly recommend the Vaughan's team!

This place meets the hype! highly recommend, do not scroll through websites just go, you will not regret!
I started Training with Jarid in July 2023. We set my fitness and health goals and I initially committed training for 12 weeks. I like the relaxed atmosphere and Jarid's no pressure approach. I trained x3 sessions week, 2x with Jarid and 1x with Miss Marissa. Jarid is a beast of a trainer and all round stand-up guy. He is an intuitive trainer who ensures he tempers the training to not break your spirits but ensure he is getting maximum results from you. I signed on for an additional 8 weeks from my initial commitment. Though I did not meet my weight loss goal, which has nothing to do with the high class training I received, I did CRUSH my strength and conditioning goals!
Jarid's approach to overall health fitness and wellness combined with habit restructuring has made exceed my fitness and weight loss goals. Now 8 weeks after leaving Vaughan's Fitness I am -19.2lbs down my initial start weight in July 2023 and still crushing workouts at home. I cannot thank Jarid and his team enough for all the love and support during my time there.

This place is awesome. The owner Jarid really cares about everyone here. As someone who was scared and intimidated of gyms and fitness in general, this place made me feel confident. I took personal training sessions for 2 months straight with Jasmin, Marissa and Maddison and all 3 of them were exceptional! They walked me through different exercises, showed me proper form and pushed me hard enough to keep challenging myself to get those last reps in. I really cannot thank these people enough and I recommend everyone to give them a shot. Everyone here is extremely friendly and supportive. Thanks to them, I was able to kick-start my fitness journey ?.

I really enjoying all aspects of the gym including the trainers. In the last 3 years, I have had 3 trainers and they all have been wonderful. With Jill leaving last month, my new trainer Catherine is also amazing. During my first session, she definitely challenged me and I enjoy her personality as well. Everyone at Vaughan's is very friendly and helpful. Even when I come to work out on my own, the staff are all helpful and I love the fact that it is such a small gym that during covid has made working out more enjoyable. Thank you Anne White

The facility is clean, in a gorgeous area overlooking the riding arena and the would equipment is in good order. Keep it up as I can see why they are successful.

Vaughan’s fitness is AMAZING! The staff are so friendly, professional and motivating. The facility is clean and beautiful, also located on beautiful grounds. Jarid is a wonderful owner, he replies promptly to emails and is super excited to get clients what they want and need. I would absolutely never go another personal training facility because at Vaughan’s, I truly feel like I’m family. Everyone knows your name, they’re invested in your fitness goals and take an active role in learning more about you. This facility and it’s members and staff are legit. They’re amazing and I would HIGHLY recommend Vaughan’s fitness to anyone looking to get in shape and achieve their fitness goals. I’ve trained with Allysia, Alyssa, Alex and Ally and they’re all amazing! It’s also a super non-threatening environment. I’ve found with going to other gyms before it can be super intimidating when you don’t know all the machines are what exercises to do, but here they explain everything, it’s non-judgemental, and everyone roots for you. 10/10 would recommend.

A welcoming, professionally developed and evidently knowledgeable environment was the initial impression I observed from Vaughan’s Fitness. One year later, I can confidently state that anyone’s goals are achievable with the dedication and support offered at Vaughan’s Fitness. In fact, you’ll enjoy surpassing them.

Previously I struggle with appropriate workouts, nutritional guidance, and minor injuries. Initially I debated the decision of inquiring into personal trainers but grateful I chose to. Over the last year, Jarid has been genuinely accommodating to my chaotic schedule. Allowing me the opportunity of working parallel with several trainers who are immensely supportive. They are as interested in your wellbeing and goals as they are fun, motivating and personable.

If you’re like me you have been humming and hawing about doing this for a long time. You are looking at websites, getting all ready to go for it only to say to yourself “maybe later”. I have done the big gym thing before and it’s not my cup of tea, main reasons being that I can never decide what equipment I should use or exercises to do, what areas I need to focus on and most importantly how to perform every exercise properly as to not injure myself. I’m one that needs to just show up to the gym, be told what exercises I am doing and be guided through those exercises in a manner that I won’t injure myself, but also with the intent to achieve the greatest result.
I have now been a member at Vaughan’s for over a year and can’t say enough about it. First off this testimonial is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I work out three times per week and have worked with the same two trainers the entire time, Alyssa and Jazmin. I have also on occasion had the fortune of working with some of the other trainers, while mine were on holidays. Marissa, Allyshia, Julianne and Tyler have all been fabulous and a pleasure to work with.
This gym is nothing like the ‘big box chain style gyms’. There is no need to feel intimidated and there is every age and body type working out here. If however, you are looking for yoga or spin classes this is not the gym for you. You get to know everyone from the trainers along with many of the other members. It is without a doubt something I look forward to doing each and every time and that’s something I never thought I would hear myself say as I have always hated the gym
Jarid Vaughn has created an incredible environment here and joining his gym is one of the best things I have ever done. I turned 50 when I first joined and I while I eat fairly well, I was a bit heavier than I wanted to be, had aches and pains here and there and just generally wanted to feel healthier and feel better about myself. I have achieved all that and then some. I never have to weigh myself because I can see the changes. I can easily say that I am in the best physical shape of my life and while I may still have the odd ache and pain (I am over 50 after all), so many of the other issues I was having for years have all disappeared.
My wife has now joined Vaugn’s one day per week and she too is really enjoying it. If you are hesitating on whether or not to join, I hope I have at least convinced you to contact Jarid and set up a consultation. Then you can stop doing your endless research on the internet and making excuses.

If you have any sort of fitness goals, go to Vaughan’s Fitness. The first time I trained with Vaughan’s I needed to get core strength to fix a back injury, and the second time was to tone up and develop over all body strength. I had very noticeable results after only a couple weeks of training and stayed training for 6+ months because I got so much out of it. My back pain has never returned and am now in great shape. The team at Vaughan’s are very knowledgeable and skilled.I learned so much about effective exercises with proper form. The sessions are tailored to your personal goals and are broken up between various types of exercises which makes each session new, interesting, and enjoyable. I cannot recommend Vaughan’s enough. They are awesome and I am so grateful for them.
