Fun Exercises to Do With a Partner

Fun Exercises to Do With a Partner

Partner workouts are popular because they make training feel less isolated, but the best partner exercises do more than make a session fun. They can improve timing, coordination, accountability, core control, and confidence when the exercise is matched to both people.

At Vaughan’s Fitness in South Langley, our university-degreed kinesiologists often use partner-style drills carefully: not as random fitness challenges, but as a way to make movement more engaging while still respecting strength level, joint history, balance, and training goals.

Quick Answer: What Are the Best Fun Exercises to Do With a Partner?

The best partner exercises are movements where both people can train safely, communicate clearly, and adjust the difficulty quickly. Good options include medicine ball chest passes, partner band rows, mirror footwork drills, plank hand taps, assisted squat-to-stand practice, and synchronized farmer carries. The goal is not to compete with your partner; it is to use the other person for feedback, rhythm, motivation, and shared effort.

If either person has pain, dizziness, recent injury, or a medical condition that affects exercise tolerance, choose low-impact options and get professional guidance before trying faster or more loaded drills.

1. Medicine Ball Chest Passes

A medicine ball chest pass is one of the simplest partner exercises because it feels natural and gives instant feedback. Stand facing your partner, hold a light medicine ball at chest height, brace your midsection, and pass the ball straight forward. Your partner catches it softly, resets their posture, and passes it back.

This drill trains upper-body power, trunk stiffness, shoulder control, and reaction timing without needing a complicated setup. It can be useful for athletes, active adults, and beginners who want a more interactive way to build coordination.

How to Make It Safer

  • Start with a light ball, usually 4 to 8 pounds for most beginners.
  • Keep passes crisp but controlled instead of throwing as hard as possible.
  • Stand close enough that the catch does not pull the shoulders forward.
  • Stop if either person feels shoulder, wrist, elbow, or back discomfort.

To progress the drill, try a small athletic stance, a split stance, or a gentle side-step between passes. In our personal training sessions, we usually progress speed only after the catch, posture, and breathing stay consistent.

2. Partner Band Rows

Partner band rows are a smart way to train the upper back without needing a cable machine. Each person holds one end of a resistance band and takes a stable stance. One person rows while the other provides steady resistance, then you switch roles.

This exercise is excellent for people who spend a lot of time sitting because it trains the muscles that help support the shoulder blades. It also teaches both partners to control tension instead of yanking through the movement.

What to Focus On

  • Keep ribs down and avoid leaning back excessively.
  • Pull elbows toward the ribs, not straight up toward the neck.
  • Pause briefly at the end of each row.
  • Match resistance to the weaker or less experienced partner.

A good partner should make the set smoother, not harder in a chaotic way. If the band tension changes too suddenly, the exercise becomes less useful and more irritating for the shoulders.

3. Mirror Footwork Drills

Mirror drills are simple, low-equipment, and surprisingly effective. One person leads with small side steps, forward steps, backward steps, or gentle direction changes while the other person mirrors them. After 20 to 30 seconds, switch leader and follower.

This works well for court-sport athletes, recreational hockey players, runners who want better control, and adults who want to improve balance and agility. The key is to keep the movement smooth and athletic rather than turning it into a race.

At Vaughan’s Fitness, our kinesiologists like mirror drills because they reveal how someone handles deceleration, side-to-side movement, foot placement, and fatigue. Those details matter for sport performance, but they also matter for everyday confidence on uneven ground, stairs, and quick changes of direction.

Beginner Version

  • Use walking-speed steps only.
  • Keep the drill in a small area.
  • Avoid crossing the feet at first.
  • Rest before movement quality drops.

4. Plank Hand Taps

Plank hand taps add a social, playful element to core training. Both partners set up in a high plank facing each other. Without twisting the hips, each person lifts one hand and taps the opposite hand of their partner, then returns to the plank.

The purpose is not to hold the longest plank possible. The purpose is to resist rotation, maintain breathing, and control shoulder position while one arm briefly leaves the floor.

Make It Fit Your Level

  • Start from an incline plank with hands on a bench if the floor version is too hard.
  • Move the feet wider apart for more stability.
  • Use slow taps instead of fast taps.
  • Stop before the low back starts sagging.

This is a good example of why individualized coaching matters. A plank can be productive for one person and irritating for another depending on shoulder tolerance, wrist comfort, trunk strength, and fatigue. For pain-informed modifications, our Langley kinesiologists can help choose a version that fits your body.

5. Assisted Squat-to-Stand

The assisted squat-to-stand is a practical partner exercise for mobility, confidence, and lower-body control. Partners face each other and lightly hold hands or forearms. Both sit into a comfortable squat range, then stand back up together.

The support from your partner can help you stay balanced, keep your chest more upright, and explore a deeper squat range without feeling like you might fall backward. This can be especially useful for beginners, older adults, or people rebuilding confidence after time away from exercise.

The important word is assisted. Your partner should provide light guidance, not pull you aggressively into position. If your knees, hips, or back feel pinchy, reduce the depth or choose a different exercise.

Coaching Cues

  • Keep feet flat on the floor.
  • Let the knees bend naturally over the toes.
  • Use a range of motion that feels strong and controlled.
  • Stand up by pushing through the whole foot.

6. Synchronized Farmer Carries

A farmer carry is simple: hold weights at your sides and walk with tall posture. With a partner, you can turn it into a synchronized drill where both people walk together for a set distance or time.

This exercise builds grip strength, trunk control, shoulder stability, and real-world carrying capacity. It is also easy to scale because each person can use different weights while still doing the same drill.

For many clients, carries feel more useful than traditional “core” exercises because they connect the trunk to walking, posture, breathing, and load. That is exactly the kind of practical strength we care about in a private studio setting.

How to Program It

  • Start with 2 to 4 carries of 20 to 40 metres.
  • Choose a weight that challenges posture without changing your gait.
  • Rest long enough that the next carry still looks clean.
  • Use one-sided carries only after you can control two-sided carries well.

How to Build a Simple Partner Workout

A good partner workout does not need to be complicated. Choose one movement for power or coordination, one for strength, one for core control, and one for conditioning. Keep the difficulty moderate enough that both people can maintain technique.

Here is a simple structure:

  • Warm-up: 5 minutes of easy walking, mobility, and light movement.
  • Coordination: Mirror footwork drills, 3 rounds of 20 seconds each.
  • Strength: Partner band rows, 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps each.
  • Core: Plank hand taps, 2 to 3 sets of 6 to 10 taps per side.
  • Carry: Synchronized farmer carries, 3 rounds of 20 to 40 metres.
  • Optional finisher: Light medicine ball passes, 2 rounds of 8 to 10 reps.

If one partner is significantly stronger, more experienced, or dealing with an old injury, scale the workout to the person who needs more control. That keeps the session productive for both people.

Partner Exercise Safety Tips

Fun exercises still need good judgment. Partner workouts can become messy when people move too fast, choose too much resistance, or turn every drill into a competition.

  • Agree on the goal first: strength, movement quality, conditioning, or fun.
  • Communicate during the set: especially with bands, medicine balls, and assisted movements.
  • Respect different levels: both partners do not need the same weight or range of motion.
  • Avoid surprise resistance: sudden pulls are rarely useful and can irritate joints.
  • Stop for sharp pain: fatigue is normal; sharp or escalating pain is not.

If you are returning after injury, dealing with back, knee, shoulder, or hip symptoms, or unsure which movements fit you, a kinesiologist-led plan is a better starting point than copying random exercises online. Our team can also help with ICBC active rehab in Langley when movement needs to be rebuilt after a car accident.

FAQ

Are partner exercises good for beginners?

Yes, partner exercises can be great for beginners when the movements are simple and controlled. Assisted squats, band rows, light medicine ball passes, and walking carries are usually better starting points than fast competitive drills.

Can partner workouts help with motivation?

Absolutely. Training with another person can improve accountability, make workouts more enjoyable, and help you show up consistently. The best results still come from matching the workout to your current strength, schedule, and recovery.

What if my partner is much stronger than me?

Use exercises where each person can scale independently. Farmer carries, band rows, incline plank taps, and controlled footwork drills all allow different difficulty levels without changing the overall workout.

Are partner exercises safe if I have pain?

It depends on the type of pain and the exercise. Mild stiffness may tolerate low-impact movement, but sharp, spreading, or worsening pain should be assessed. Do not use partner drills as a substitute for medical or kinesiology advice.

How often should we do partner workouts?

One or two partner sessions per week can work well for many people, especially when combined with a consistent strength program. If the workouts are intense, allow enough recovery between sessions.

2024 update:

My wife and I have been training with Vaughan's for 6 years! We love the friendly and supportive trainers and environment.

Special kudos to our two trainers Marissa and Jorell who challenge us every week while making it fun, and of course to Jarid for his leadership. We are really pleased with the fitness levels and strength they've helped us to build.

Highly recommend the Vaughan's team!

This place meets the hype! highly recommend, do not scroll through websites just go, you will not regret!
I started Training with Jarid in July 2023. We set my fitness and health goals and I initially committed training for 12 weeks. I like the relaxed atmosphere and Jarid's no pressure approach. I trained x3 sessions week, 2x with Jarid and 1x with Miss Marissa. Jarid is a beast of a trainer and all round stand-up guy. He is an intuitive trainer who ensures he tempers the training to not break your spirits but ensure he is getting maximum results from you. I signed on for an additional 8 weeks from my initial commitment. Though I did not meet my weight loss goal, which has nothing to do with the high class training I received, I did CRUSH my strength and conditioning goals!
Jarid's approach to overall health fitness and wellness combined with habit restructuring has made exceed my fitness and weight loss goals. Now 8 weeks after leaving Vaughan's Fitness I am -19.2lbs down my initial start weight in July 2023 and still crushing workouts at home. I cannot thank Jarid and his team enough for all the love and support during my time there.

This place is awesome. The owner Jarid really cares about everyone here. As someone who was scared and intimidated of gyms and fitness in general, this place made me feel confident. I took personal training sessions for 2 months straight with Jasmin, Marissa and Maddison and all 3 of them were exceptional! They walked me through different exercises, showed me proper form and pushed me hard enough to keep challenging myself to get those last reps in. I really cannot thank these people enough and I recommend everyone to give them a shot. Everyone here is extremely friendly and supportive. Thanks to them, I was able to kick-start my fitness journey ?.

I really enjoying all aspects of the gym including the trainers. In the last 3 years, I have had 3 trainers and they all have been wonderful. With Jill leaving last month, my new trainer Catherine is also amazing. During my first session, she definitely challenged me and I enjoy her personality as well. Everyone at Vaughan's is very friendly and helpful. Even when I come to work out on my own, the staff are all helpful and I love the fact that it is such a small gym that during covid has made working out more enjoyable. Thank you Anne White

Vaughan’s fitness is AMAZING! The staff are so friendly, professional and motivating. The facility is clean and beautiful, also located on beautiful grounds. Jarid is a wonderful owner, he replies promptly to emails and is super excited to get clients what they want and need. I would absolutely never go another personal training facility because at Vaughan’s, I truly feel like I’m family. Everyone knows your name, they’re invested in your fitness goals and take an active role in learning more about you. This facility and it’s members and staff are legit. They’re amazing and I would HIGHLY recommend Vaughan’s fitness to anyone looking to get in shape and achieve their fitness goals. I’ve trained with Allysia, Alyssa, Alex and Ally and they’re all amazing! It’s also a super non-threatening environment. I’ve found with going to other gyms before it can be super intimidating when you don’t know all the machines are what exercises to do, but here they explain everything, it’s non-judgemental, and everyone roots for you. 10/10 would recommend.

A welcoming, professionally developed and evidently knowledgeable environment was the initial impression I observed from Vaughan’s Fitness. One year later, I can confidently state that anyone’s goals are achievable with the dedication and support offered at Vaughan’s Fitness. In fact, you’ll enjoy surpassing them.

Previously I struggle with appropriate workouts, nutritional guidance, and minor injuries. Initially I debated the decision of inquiring into personal trainers but grateful I chose to. Over the last year, Jarid has been genuinely accommodating to my chaotic schedule. Allowing me the opportunity of working parallel with several trainers who are immensely supportive. They are as interested in your wellbeing and goals as they are fun, motivating and personable.

If you’re like me you have been humming and hawing about doing this for a long time. You are looking at websites, getting all ready to go for it only to say to yourself “maybe later”. I have done the big gym thing before and it’s not my cup of tea, main reasons being that I can never decide what equipment I should use or exercises to do, what areas I need to focus on and most importantly how to perform every exercise properly as to not injure myself. I’m one that needs to just show up to the gym, be told what exercises I am doing and be guided through those exercises in a manner that I won’t injure myself, but also with the intent to achieve the greatest result.
I have now been a member at Vaughan’s for over a year and can’t say enough about it. First off this testimonial is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I work out three times per week and have worked with the same two trainers the entire time, Alyssa and Jazmin. I have also on occasion had the fortune of working with some of the other trainers, while mine were on holidays. Marissa, Allyshia, Julianne and Tyler have all been fabulous and a pleasure to work with.
This gym is nothing like the ‘big box chain style gyms’. There is no need to feel intimidated and there is every age and body type working out here. If however, you are looking for yoga or spin classes this is not the gym for you. You get to know everyone from the trainers along with many of the other members. It is without a doubt something I look forward to doing each and every time and that’s something I never thought I would hear myself say as I have always hated the gym
Jarid Vaughn has created an incredible environment here and joining his gym is one of the best things I have ever done. I turned 50 when I first joined and I while I eat fairly well, I was a bit heavier than I wanted to be, had aches and pains here and there and just generally wanted to feel healthier and feel better about myself. I have achieved all that and then some. I never have to weigh myself because I can see the changes. I can easily say that I am in the best physical shape of my life and while I may still have the odd ache and pain (I am over 50 after all), so many of the other issues I was having for years have all disappeared.
My wife has now joined Vaugn’s one day per week and she too is really enjoying it. If you are hesitating on whether or not to join, I hope I have at least convinced you to contact Jarid and set up a consultation. Then you can stop doing your endless research on the internet and making excuses.

If you have any sort of fitness goals, go to Vaughan’s Fitness. The first time I trained with Vaughan’s I needed to get core strength to fix a back injury, and the second time was to tone up and develop over all body strength. I had very noticeable results after only a couple weeks of training and stayed training for 6+ months because I got so much out of it. My back pain has never returned and am now in great shape. The team at Vaughan’s are very knowledgeable and skilled.I learned so much about effective exercises with proper form. The sessions are tailored to your personal goals and are broken up between various types of exercises which makes each session new, interesting, and enjoyable. I cannot recommend Vaughan’s enough. They are awesome and I am so grateful for them.
